Fitting Ferrules to Walking Sticks and Canes

The next step is to select and fit a ferrule to protect the bottom end of your walking sticks before putting the finishing touches to the walking canes.

For making walking sticks UK and Ireland three choices of material for the ferrule: metal, rubber or horn all can be fitted to all walking sticks. I shall deal with horn later because, to my mind, such a ferrule goes best with a walking sticks handle to match. As for rubber, whilst giving a good grip and being easy to fit (and replace) it always appears cumbersome to me. So, I am going to concentrate here on metal ferrules.

At its cheapest, a sawn-off piece of copper tubing will suffice, but it always looks just what it is. For the modest cost involved, a purpose-made, closed- end ferrule in dull brass is the answer, being both neat and durable.

Brass ferrules are available in a variety of sizes for different walking sticks, ranging from /8—1 inch (10—25mm), and can be purchased singly at game fairs and larger agricultural shows, or in quantities from the suppliers of walking sticks material.

New app for Ash Tree Disease

Picture
A new app has been launched to help prevent the spread of the devastating disease that has wiped out million of trees across the UK and Europe.

Ash is a very important material for making walking sticks and canes; we use ash for making walking sticks just as much as any other type of timber and it would be a devastating blow to all walking sticks makers.

The disease is known as ash dieback, caused by the fungus
Chalara fraxinea, the disease was first found in the UK last week raising fears that it might spread right through the UK.

Ash is used to make all types of walking sticks and walking canes; knob, crook and thumb walking sticks are all used to make ash-walking canes. One advantage of ash is the strength for the timber, which is excellent for making quality walking sticks. We also cut ash in 6 by 6 inch squares to make crook handles that are used in shepherd’s crook walking sticks.

One major checks sound be made is you find a ash tree with this disease, it is recognisable by lesions on their bark, dieback of leaves and the trees crown and also leaves turning brown. But one major problem is with autumn seasons make it harder to spot the disease on the ash trees.

The idea of the app is that if you see or if you think you have seen the disease you can submit photos and the location of the trees, then the app will send the information on the forestry commission.

Walking Sticks with a Trout Design

Picture
LEAPING TROUT WALKING STICKS

We come now to the fourth walking canes subject in this ‘natural history’ class, and the dream 0f most UK fly fishermen — a well proportioned, leaping trout walking sticks! Represented as a fish, which has just left the water to take a fly, the handle is usually carved from ram’s horn walking sticks in inverted ‘U’ shape. I have to say, immediately, that fish do not naturally adopt such contorted attitudes when leaping for flies, but walking sticks makers have to he allowed some degree of artistic licence if we are to work within the twin constraints of available material and making a practical walking sticks.

Picture
SUITABLE MATERIAL

Although it is perfectly possible to make a walking canes handle like this from wood, ram’s horn in the UK produces a much better effect. It does not require first- rate material when making the walking sticks; the most important criterion is that it contains sufficient solid material at its tip to allow this area, when squeezed flat, to be shaped into the trout’s tail.

For your trout walking sticks elect a horn, which will provide a minimum of 1lin (279mm) of workable material with a wall thickness, after cutting the walking sticks to length, approaching 3/sin (10mm) or more. If necessary, remove the quick and cut the horn to length before boiling for about half an hour, before fitting to the walking canes shank.

Essential Equipment for Making Walking Sticks

ESSENTIAL EQU IPMENT

The first pair of formers will be used to bring the horn close to the walking sticks UK handle shape we are seeking. They can be made from hard wood or metal to the dimensions. If you decide to make these, it is important to note that in the bottom former the rounded corners are not exactly the same shape. One has had less of the corner removed to accommodate the neck (or walking sticks shank) end of the horn; the other, which is much more rounded, will take the nose end.

The second pair of formers, which will be used to squeeze (i.e. bulk) the horn to make the neck of the walking sticks handle, can be made from a 3m (76mm) length of 11/4in (32mm) diameter metal pipe, sawn lengthways into two equal pieces (see Fig 5.3). To reinforce these pieces, I have welded a short section of steel sheet to the back of each; whilst this is not critical it does make them easier to walking sticks handle in the vice and also helps to prevent the pieces of pipe from splaying outwards when under pressure.

In both cases, the moulds I have described are not difficult or costly to make for walking sticks rams horn, but if you prefer to purchase something ready-made and more sophisticated, will be able to help. In addition to these moulds, you will also need an engineers’ vice, a 7 x 7in (178 x 178mm) metal plate, 1/4in (6mm) thick, a 7in (178mm) G-cramp and two Sin (127mm) G-cramps in order to exert and sustain the pressure needed to shape the horn until it has set. The sizes for the G-cramps are minimum sizes and are not critical.

Bring Walking Sticks on Planes

We get many questions from international and UK buyers on walking sticks on planes, to the best of my knowledge most airports allow walking sticks on planes, to them its a walking aid not just a walking stick so you need it to get in and out of the aeroplane. Many people have told us they have now problems getting there walking sticks on planes and bringing them home, but to make sure we also advise to contact the airport before bringing one along.

The best type of walking sticks to bring on a plane are adjustable or folding walking sticks, this way when you get onto the plane you can fold the stick up and store it away. As for a long walking stick there might be the possibility that they wouldn't let you on with it, just because of its height they might refuse.

Nordic Walking Sticks

Nordic walking sticks Nordic walking is defined as fitness walking with two specially designed walking sticks. While our walkers, backpackers and hikers have used the basic concept for a long time, Marko Kantaneva only published the sport of Nordic walking in 1997. The concept of using the walking sticks was the basic off-season ski training activity. This included the description of the actual exercise, the instructions on how the sport was done, the physiological reason for doing it, and the walking sticks needed to do it.

In the year of the publication on the Nordic walking sticks were produced and made by Exel. The name Nordic walking was well known by 1999 thought Exel. Exel is a very well known company with introducing the carbon poles to the skiing industry. Exel was also the first company to use trainers to teach people how to use the Nordic walking sticks in the right way.

Compared to normal walking Nordic walking involves using force on the walking sticks with each stride. When using the Nordic walking sticks you use your whole body and receive more fitness which you don’t get when normal walking, like the chest, lats, triceps, biceps, shoulder, abdominal, spinal and other core muscles which then may led to a increase in heart rate at a given pace. Nordic can produce more than 46% increase in energy consumption not like normal walking with out any walking sticks.

Nordic walking poles are significantly shorter than those recommended for cross-country skiing. Using poles of incorrect length may add stress to the walker's knees, hips and/or back, diminishing the benefits of walking with poles. Nordic walking poles come in both one-piece, non-adjustable shaft versions, and telescoping two-piece twist-locking adjustable length versions. Nordic walking poles feature grips with special Nordic walking straps - a kind of fingerless glove, allowing power transmission through the strap and eliminates the need to tightly grasp the pole grips.

How to Making Buffalo Walking Sticks

Working with buffalo horn for making walking sticks – buffalo horn is a very attractive material and two main colours, one is jet black and the other is a multi coloured. Jet-black buffalo horn is mainly black but can have a white and greys colours coming thought on the horn, this only adds to the handle and its look.

The coloured buffalo horn has more characters than the black with more colours like greens and browns, the colours are very dark and look excellent with a very attractive look with added to your walking sticks, its hard to find the right coloured horn but when carved out the colours run smoothly with each other rather like the colours of a duck. Mostly this looks better in large shepherds crook walking sticks.

The coloured horn is also much more softer than the jet-black and much more easy to work with. But both types are very dense so when making walking sticks from them you need a concentrated heat to bend the horn. Most horn that is purchase in the UK has no inner core like rams horn so this very useful when making walking sticks from them, They also only have one plane unlike rams horn which bends in many ways, This also makes it easier to make the horn suitable for making walking sticks.

Walking Sticks - Rams Horn Making

The lands of ram's horns for walking sticks-rams horns gives off an impression of being exceptionally strong, unbending, bone enjoyed substance not divergent to prong. To say to identify it tricky to find the right walking sticks here is a minor cut, which gives you a thought of, were to look and what to search for. Stream unfilled spaces are an essential place to consider different varieties of walking sticks, is this movie every last trace of the walking sticks were found in the same area on the currents edge. Hazel develop practically all over the place in current monetary institutions but blackthorns just develop in certain puts, here on the film the blackthorns are just 10 yards for the waterway and have been developing there for 10's of years. Most thumb waling sticks have a spacer or collar between the handle and shank. The hardest part of the thumb walking sticks is getting a suitable V handle and a shank to match. One easier solution is to get a great thumb stick handle with a perfect V and then fit it to a suitable shank that really matches the handle.

The ranges of suitable handles for thumb walking sticks are wood, antler, horn even nylon can be used to good effect. I have seen a V handle for one tree and a shank from the type of tree and then jointed together with a collar or spacer covering the joint made from antler to make excellent walking sticks. Antlers themselves can make a suitable V handle that can be trimmed and fitted any shank. Those from roe deer make lightweight walking sticks while red deer make more robust walking sticks with a much more heavy handle.

Next step for your walking sticks - when the antler has been trimmed then the trimmed tines have to be capped with a horn or antler.  Buffalo horn is a attractive cap, when the cap has been fitted to the tines its then has to be trimmed and fitted to the antler. Once this is done you can then drill the shank and handle to fit each other an place a threaded bar into the handle first, if you want your walking sticks to stand out before you join the handle and shank together you can place a spacer or collar in between, its simple just drill the spacer the same as the handle and the shank and then place all together, the handle spacer and shank, I like to fit the spacer after you glue the joints. Then you simple spacer and caps have transformed your walking stick, and the same can be done to all your walking sticks.

Antique Walking Sticks

Antique walking sticks cover a large range of walking sticks, the hardest part of antique walking sticks is getting them in perfect condition but for stick to be over 100 years old you can inspect a bit damage. Most of our antique walking sticks are in very good condition we don't like selling damaged sticks.

We can also repair old walking sticks that need a bit of T.L.C, most can be repaired with on much cost but you always get one that is beyond repair, if you need some advice just give us a call.

Silver antique walking sticks are very popular but most come at a price. We also to keep some quality silver canes in stock and getting the right silver walking sticks is very hard to find, nobody wants a damaged silver handle or collar, when the handle or collar are full of dents its almost impossible to repair.

Gold handle walking sticks are even more difficult to get, most people like to hold onto there antique canes because they have be pasted thought there family. The downside to gold walking sticks is the massive price tag with each of them even if there are fully damaged.

Sourcing Walking Sticks

If you find it hard to source the correct walking sticks here is a small clip, which gives you an idea of, were to look and what to look for. River blanks are a great place to find all types of walking sticks, is this video all the walking sticks were found in the same location on the rivers edge. Hazel grow almost everywhere along river banks but blackthorns only grow in certain places, here on the video the blackthorns are only 10 yards for the river and have been growing there for 10's of years. Its very well grown over and you wouldn't know that there their unless you had a good look around. These blackthorns would make perfect walking sticks, but unless you look after them it gets harder and harder to cut them, when we cut blackthorns we try and keep them open, blackthorns have a tendency to grow on top of each other and tangle themselves up, so when you can its better cut away any branches and open the trees up. In a couple of years you will find a massive difference when looking for the walking sticks you need.

In the video you will see new growth branches growing for a previous cut tree, it may take a long time for blackthorns but someday they’d will make perfect knob walking sticks, and if you take your time a cut of any branches that are getting in they way you will get a good few walking sticks for the one tree.

Shape the handle

If you are using a block of timber or a one piece walking sticks its much the same idea, when the walking stick or blank handle is seasoned you need to square of the edges, so you have a square blank to work with which then you can transfer your template onto the blank. If you need a crook blank we can give you a full size blank to work with. The shepherds crook walking sticks handle is just the same as the cardigan handle, the same work that is involved in each of them. When you transfer the template to the walking sticks blank it is now time to cut out the blank with a jigsaw or handsaw.

Don't follow to close to the line of the template, if you make any mistakes its to late to do anything, the rest of timber can be rasped off later. Just like the cardigan walking sticks it’s now time to use a rasp to remove the rest of the unwanted timber. Round the edges of the handle to make the handle of the walking stick completely round leave no flats edges and keep the whole handle round. The smoother and rounder the handle it makes for a much more balanced walking sticks.

Wooden Crook and Market Walking Sticks:

Shepherds Crook or Market walking sticks can be made from many materials but there are 2 opinions, whether to make it a one piece or two piece walking sticks, one piece is a handle and shaft made from the one piece of timber, with piece is a shaft and handle made seperately. Both types of walking sticks both look very well when completed with each on having its supporter and critics.

A good starting point is to identify the differance between a market and crook walking sticks, once this was quite straight forward with a shepherds crook was very much by sheep farmers while a market walking stick more embellished product, a walking sticks showen off at markets and special occasions. Over the years the simple differance has become blurred.

A simpler way to distinguish between them these days is by the lenght of the shaft. Remember the orginal purpose, crook walking sticks will always be longer than market walking sticks, with 52 inch for crook walking sticks and 48 inch for market walking sticks.

Making a Whistle

Picture Here is how make your were own whistle out of a walking sticks handle or as a small wooden whistle, the rules apply to any whistle. For a whistle that is carved into walking sticks, it takes suitable walking sticks for the job and not all walking sticks can have a whsitle carved into them. The piece of wood you use for the whistle needs to be more than 10mm anout 20mm or more for comfort.

Start by drilling a 10mm hole into the walking sticks handle as showen in the picture, drill about 38mm into the handle and try and keep the hole as straight as you can. Next is to cut a notch out of the walking sticks handle, start by marking 13mm back from the end of the whistle showen on the picture, and cut a straight cut from this mark until you reach the hole you have drilled from before.

Next is to tidy up the notch with a sharp chisel of knife, the more tidy it is the better the sound of the whistle, usually buffalo horn or staghorn are a lot better for making whistle because they are a harder material and make a much better sound. Next cut a 39mm lenght by 10 diameter dowel, shave off almost half the diameter to create a flat surface along the lenght of the dowel. This will be inserted into the walking sticks handle where the hole was drilled.

The final step is to insert the dowel flat side up into the hole until it reaches the notch. Test the whistle and shave off a little more if neccessary. When you are happy with the sound of the whistle glue the dowel in place, once the glue has set cut off the rest of the dowel level with the front of the whistle. This makes all walking sticks stand out, and the great thing is that you always have a whistle near by when you need it.

Cutting the Walking Stick

Its now time to cut the walking sticks to your desired length before fitting the ferrule. If the walking sticks are been talor made for someone you should involve them in the decision making. Hold the walking sticks and note the angle of the elbow, if it is bend it is to long if the elbow is straight the walking sticks are already to small. What you are aiming for is something that is faciliate the process of walking. A comfortable walking sticks is a extenision of your hand, and when you using it yopu shouldn't be aware that it is there. One which is to long will become tiring to use, whilst a walking sticks that is to small will fail to provide a neccessaery lift.

If the walking sticks are not meant for any one, a standard height is about 36 inch. While this may be to long for most people it is easy to cut them to size. What ever length you decide to cut the walking sticks at remember to cut them with a fine tooth saw and protect the bark of the walking sticks when in the vice. Then you can fit the ferrule and varish the waling sticks.

When you have mastered the technique of converting a round branch into a sqaure block the varity of walking sticks handle which can be fashionable is almost unlimited.

Shaping the Handle

Picture Have a look at the walking sticks  handle which is starting to develop, how does it look is it symmetrical, is it likely to fit into the hand. You have to be satisfied for this is the final opportunity you have to make final adjustments before removing the waste wood still remaining on the walking sticks handle. Althought the bottom line fo the handle has already been determined, the top line can still be be extended if you think it will produce a more comfortable walking sticks. Whilst it is unusually for the handle to be cut parrallel to the walking sticks shank. it quite acceptable for the top line to be beyond the bottom, thus producing an angled cut to the end. Once you have made your decision use a panel saw to remove the remainging waste. You should now hold the walking sticks upright as if you going to use it.

What remains is to shape the handle into something that feels good and looks good. You should be trying to produce a handle which in cros section should be in the shaoe of a inverted egg, and in plan tapers slightly from the end to the top of the walking sticks shank. For your first attempt on the walking sticks its better to taper ina form of a wedge. With more experience you ca  develop more interesting elongated bell shape. It isn''t that much more difficult to make but it produces a lot better looking walking sticks.

Drawing the Handle Cardigan Stick

Picture Next is to draw the handle of the cardigan walking sticks - Now we need transfer the outline of the handle using the template on the last post. I usually cut my templates from plastic cut outs or cardboard. Plastic is more durable than cardboard but cardboard will do it there is nothing else. Having trimmed nad cut the template out for your walking sticks, positon it at a right angle to the walking sticks shank, hold it firmly and draw around it in pencil. It is not necessary to draw on both sides of the handle. If you happy with way the handles looks to the walking sticks shank, you can start to cut out some of the surplus wood.

Cutting out the handle on your walking sticks - if you have access to a jigsaw or bandsaw do not cut around the outline in one go, if you do so and are dissatisfied with the result shape you are lefted with very little room to manoeuvre. Only remove the wood on the bottom of the walking sticks handle first, make a series of cuts at 1/4 intervals parallel with the shank stopping just short of the line.

Know your Material

Picture
Having cut trimmed and seaon your walking sticks, its now time to start work on the walking sticks. Look critically at the walking sticks you about to start shaping on like a woodcarver or sculture would do. Handle it and imagine what the finished piece should look like. This should give you a feel for the walking sticks, and see in you mind what it should look like. Its a important stage in the walking sticks making.

Initial Shaping the walking sticks - the next step is to convert the round branch of the handle into a flat regtangular block, see picture up above. To do this cut two longitudinal cuts on the walking sticks handle with a small axe or panel saw as showen n picture above. This should be parellel to the walking sticks shank and should be made so that the they produce a block with a maxium diameter of 2 inch. The lenght and depth of the block with be determined by the shape of the branch. At this stage there no more work to be done on the block any surplus wood will be removed as we start the shape of the walking sticks handle.

Cardigan Walking Sticks

Picture
Cardigan Walking Sticks - the critical thing in making this walking sticks is a suitable shank growing from the a branch at a appropriate angle. If the angle is to wide or to narrow, whilst is may be suitable for other walking sticks but not for cardigan walking sticks.

What we are looking for ia a suitable shank for your walking sticks like on the picture to the left. With such a ahank it will be relatively easy to find sufficent length, width and depth to work with at the point where the potential shank meets the branch of the tree.

In thoery a cardigan walking sticks can be made from any tree which offers a confirmation of a branch and a shank. Most cardigan walking sticks i make come from hazel wood. Not only does hazel have all what we are looking for but the conbinations of a attrative bark and grain on the finished handle are difficult to beat. They only other thing to look for is that ponit A to B on the picture lefted should taper slightly(from A to B). The figure 1.7 is not to scale, if you need the full length give us a email.

Colouring Techniques

Staining walking sticks -  if you decide to stain walking sticks its always better to try it out on a sample or cut of  piece first. It will always be different from the colour showen on the tin. Its better to start with a lighter stain first for your walking sticks and then darken it, if neccessary apply more coats, than to produce something that is immediately darker than you wanted. Remember stains quickly penetrate the surface of raw wood and can't be easily wipes off if it is not what you expected. So experiment before you start the real walking sticks.

Fuming walking sticks - The traditional method of fuming is another method of colouring wood. It takes longer and it may not suit the impatient, but the results can be effective. Fuming walking sticks requires an infusion of bark peelings and boiling water to be made. This when cold is wiped over the peeled walking sticks. The walking sticks should then be suspended in a suitable lenght of plastic rainwater pipe with a polythene bag tied in placed on the top end to seal it. Postition the pipe so it is resting vertical, place a small container of ammonia below the bottom end and leave the walking sticks to stew in the ammonia fumes. Check the progess after a couple of hours, and when the colouration is to your statisfaction remove the walking sticks form the ammonia. Leave it to dry out completely then gently rub in linseed oil with 0000 wire wool to bring out the finish. If you going to try this colouring technique only do so outdoors, and carefully observe the manufactors instructions for handling and disposing of the ammonia. You walking sticks are finished.

Check out our blog for more: http://www.prestigewalkingsticks.com/walking-stick-blog.html

Finish the walking sticks

You also may add a finish to the walking sticks to enhance and to protect it. Start by removing any grime or dirt on the walking sticks. Using fine 0000 grade steel wool dipped in warm soapy water, lightly rub down the walking sticks, then wipe it clean leave to dry for a half an hour. Apply a coat of sanding sealer, sparingly using a cloth dipped in liquid, leave thsi to dry fro at least 2 hours then apply the first coat of yatch varish diluted with white spirit(50:50) with a cloth or brush, the secret is not to apply to much on the walking sticks and avoid introducing foreign bodies like fluff and hair. Leave to try in a warm room for overnight then come back and gently use 0000 grade steel wool. Wipe the the walking sticks clean being carful to remove any steel wool and then apply the second coat, this time with undiltued varish. Leave to dry as before, wipe clean and apply the third coat of undiltued varish. Once this have dryed the walking sticks are ready for use.

http://www.prestigewalkingsticks.com/walking-stick-blog.html

Cutting the walking stick to size

Next is to cut the walking sticks to your required height. Remember the old carpenters maim: measure twice and cut once. For the job i clamp the walking sticks into the vice, having first protected the bark with a lenght of plastick piping about 3 inch length x 1 inch diameter, plit in two lenghtways around the appropriate section. Providing the bark is protected any means of holding it steady will do. I use a hacksaw which is finer than a tenon saw which leaves a fine cut and helps dtop the bark spliting, but any fine tooth saw will do. That is your walking sticks cut to size.
