Having cut trimmed and seaon your walking sticks,
its now time to start work on the walking sticks. Look critically at
the walking sticks you about to start shaping on like a woodcarver or
sculture would do. Handle it and imagine what the finished piece should
look like. This should give you a feel for the walking sticks, and see in you mind what it should look like. Its a important stage in the walking sticks making.
Initial Shaping the walking sticks - the next step is to convert the round branch of the handle into a flat regtangular block, see picture up above. To do this cut two longitudinal cuts on the walking sticks handle with a small axe or panel saw as showen n picture above. This should be parellel to the walking sticks shank and should be made so that the they produce a block with a maxium diameter of 2 inch. The lenght and depth of the block with be determined by the shape of the branch. At this stage there no more work to be done on the block any surplus wood will be removed as we start the shape of the walking sticks handle.
