Nordic Walking Sticks

Nordic walking sticks Nordic walking is defined as fitness walking with two specially designed walking sticks. While our walkers, backpackers and hikers have used the basic concept for a long time, Marko Kantaneva only published the sport of Nordic walking in 1997. The concept of using the walking sticks was the basic off-season ski training activity. This included the description of the actual exercise, the instructions on how the sport was done, the physiological reason for doing it, and the walking sticks needed to do it.

In the year of the publication on the Nordic walking sticks were produced and made by Exel. The name Nordic walking was well known by 1999 thought Exel. Exel is a very well known company with introducing the carbon poles to the skiing industry. Exel was also the first company to use trainers to teach people how to use the Nordic walking sticks in the right way.

Compared to normal walking Nordic walking involves using force on the walking sticks with each stride. When using the Nordic walking sticks you use your whole body and receive more fitness which you don’t get when normal walking, like the chest, lats, triceps, biceps, shoulder, abdominal, spinal and other core muscles which then may led to a increase in heart rate at a given pace. Nordic can produce more than 46% increase in energy consumption not like normal walking with out any walking sticks.

Nordic walking poles are significantly shorter than those recommended for cross-country skiing. Using poles of incorrect length may add stress to the walker's knees, hips and/or back, diminishing the benefits of walking with poles. Nordic walking poles come in both one-piece, non-adjustable shaft versions, and telescoping two-piece twist-locking adjustable length versions. Nordic walking poles feature grips with special Nordic walking straps - a kind of fingerless glove, allowing power transmission through the strap and eliminates the need to tightly grasp the pole grips.
