Making a Whistle

Picture Here is how make your were own whistle out of a walking sticks handle or as a small wooden whistle, the rules apply to any whistle. For a whistle that is carved into walking sticks, it takes suitable walking sticks for the job and not all walking sticks can have a whsitle carved into them. The piece of wood you use for the whistle needs to be more than 10mm anout 20mm or more for comfort.

Start by drilling a 10mm hole into the walking sticks handle as showen in the picture, drill about 38mm into the handle and try and keep the hole as straight as you can. Next is to cut a notch out of the walking sticks handle, start by marking 13mm back from the end of the whistle showen on the picture, and cut a straight cut from this mark until you reach the hole you have drilled from before.

Next is to tidy up the notch with a sharp chisel of knife, the more tidy it is the better the sound of the whistle, usually buffalo horn or staghorn are a lot better for making whistle because they are a harder material and make a much better sound. Next cut a 39mm lenght by 10 diameter dowel, shave off almost half the diameter to create a flat surface along the lenght of the dowel. This will be inserted into the walking sticks handle where the hole was drilled.

The final step is to insert the dowel flat side up into the hole until it reaches the notch. Test the whistle and shave off a little more if neccessary. When you are happy with the sound of the whistle glue the dowel in place, once the glue has set cut off the rest of the dowel level with the front of the whistle. This makes all walking sticks stand out, and the great thing is that you always have a whistle near by when you need it.

Cutting the Walking Stick

Its now time to cut the walking sticks to your desired length before fitting the ferrule. If the walking sticks are been talor made for someone you should involve them in the decision making. Hold the walking sticks and note the angle of the elbow, if it is bend it is to long if the elbow is straight the walking sticks are already to small. What you are aiming for is something that is faciliate the process of walking. A comfortable walking sticks is a extenision of your hand, and when you using it yopu shouldn't be aware that it is there. One which is to long will become tiring to use, whilst a walking sticks that is to small will fail to provide a neccessaery lift.

If the walking sticks are not meant for any one, a standard height is about 36 inch. While this may be to long for most people it is easy to cut them to size. What ever length you decide to cut the walking sticks at remember to cut them with a fine tooth saw and protect the bark of the walking sticks when in the vice. Then you can fit the ferrule and varish the waling sticks.

When you have mastered the technique of converting a round branch into a sqaure block the varity of walking sticks handle which can be fashionable is almost unlimited.

http://www.prestigewalkingsticks.com/walking-stick-blog.html

Shaping the Handle

Picture Have a look at the walking sticks  handle which is starting to develop, how does it look is it symmetrical, is it likely to fit into the hand. You have to be satisfied for this is the final opportunity you have to make final adjustments before removing the waste wood still remaining on the walking sticks handle. Althought the bottom line fo the handle has already been determined, the top line can still be be extended if you think it will produce a more comfortable walking sticks. Whilst it is unusually for the handle to be cut parrallel to the walking sticks shank. it quite acceptable for the top line to be beyond the bottom, thus producing an angled cut to the end. Once you have made your decision use a panel saw to remove the remainging waste. You should now hold the walking sticks upright as if you going to use it.

What remains is to shape the handle into something that feels good and looks good. You should be trying to produce a handle which in cros section should be in the shaoe of a inverted egg, and in plan tapers slightly from the end to the top of the walking sticks shank. For your first attempt on the walking sticks its better to taper ina form of a wedge. With more experience you ca  develop more interesting elongated bell shape. It isn''t that much more difficult to make but it produces a lot better looking walking sticks.

Drawing the Handle Cardigan Stick

Picture Next is to draw the handle of the cardigan walking sticks - Now we need transfer the outline of the handle using the template on the last post. I usually cut my templates from plastic cut outs or cardboard. Plastic is more durable than cardboard but cardboard will do it there is nothing else. Having trimmed nad cut the template out for your walking sticks, positon it at a right angle to the walking sticks shank, hold it firmly and draw around it in pencil. It is not necessary to draw on both sides of the handle. If you happy with way the handles looks to the walking sticks shank, you can start to cut out some of the surplus wood.

Cutting out the handle on your walking sticks - if you have access to a jigsaw or bandsaw do not cut around the outline in one go, if you do so and are dissatisfied with the result shape you are lefted with very little room to manoeuvre. Only remove the wood on the bottom of the walking sticks handle first, make a series of cuts at 1/4 intervals parallel with the shank stopping just short of the line.

http://www.prestigewalkingsticks.com/walking-stick-blog.html

Know your Material

Picture
Having cut trimmed and seaon your walking sticks, its now time to start work on the walking sticks. Look critically at the walking sticks you about to start shaping on like a woodcarver or sculture would do. Handle it and imagine what the finished piece should look like. This should give you a feel for the walking sticks, and see in you mind what it should look like. Its a important stage in the walking sticks making.

Initial Shaping the walking sticks - the next step is to convert the round branch of the handle into a flat regtangular block, see picture up above. To do this cut two longitudinal cuts on the walking sticks handle with a small axe or panel saw as showen n picture above. This should be parellel to the walking sticks shank and should be made so that the they produce a block with a maxium diameter of 2 inch. The lenght and depth of the block with be determined by the shape of the branch. At this stage there no more work to be done on the block any surplus wood will be removed as we start the shape of the walking sticks handle.

Cardigan Walking Sticks

Picture
Cardigan Walking Sticks - the critical thing in making this walking sticks is a suitable shank growing from the a branch at a appropriate angle. If the angle is to wide or to narrow, whilst is may be suitable for other walking sticks but not for cardigan walking sticks.

What we are looking for ia a suitable shank for your walking sticks like on the picture to the left. With such a ahank it will be relatively easy to find sufficent length, width and depth to work with at the point where the potential shank meets the branch of the tree.

In thoery a cardigan walking sticks can be made from any tree which offers a confirmation of a branch and a shank. Most cardigan walking sticks i make come from hazel wood. Not only does hazel have all what we are looking for but the conbinations of a attrative bark and grain on the finished handle are difficult to beat. They only other thing to look for is that ponit A to B on the picture lefted should taper slightly(from A to B). The figure 1.7 is not to scale, if you need the full length give us a email.

Colouring Techniques

Staining walking sticks -  if you decide to stain walking sticks its always better to try it out on a sample or cut of  piece first. It will always be different from the colour showen on the tin. Its better to start with a lighter stain first for your walking sticks and then darken it, if neccessary apply more coats, than to produce something that is immediately darker than you wanted. Remember stains quickly penetrate the surface of raw wood and can't be easily wipes off if it is not what you expected. So experiment before you start the real walking sticks.

Fuming walking sticks - The traditional method of fuming is another method of colouring wood. It takes longer and it may not suit the impatient, but the results can be effective. Fuming walking sticks requires an infusion of bark peelings and boiling water to be made. This when cold is wiped over the peeled walking sticks. The walking sticks should then be suspended in a suitable lenght of plastic rainwater pipe with a polythene bag tied in placed on the top end to seal it. Postition the pipe so it is resting vertical, place a small container of ammonia below the bottom end and leave the walking sticks to stew in the ammonia fumes. Check the progess after a couple of hours, and when the colouration is to your statisfaction remove the walking sticks form the ammonia. Leave it to dry out completely then gently rub in linseed oil with 0000 wire wool to bring out the finish. If you going to try this colouring technique only do so outdoors, and carefully observe the manufactors instructions for handling and disposing of the ammonia. You walking sticks are finished.

Check out our blog for more: http://www.prestigewalkingsticks.com/walking-stick-blog.html

Finish the walking sticks

You also may add a finish to the walking sticks to enhance and to protect it. Start by removing any grime or dirt on the walking sticks. Using fine 0000 grade steel wool dipped in warm soapy water, lightly rub down the walking sticks, then wipe it clean leave to dry for a half an hour. Apply a coat of sanding sealer, sparingly using a cloth dipped in liquid, leave thsi to dry fro at least 2 hours then apply the first coat of yatch varish diluted with white spirit(50:50) with a cloth or brush, the secret is not to apply to much on the walking sticks and avoid introducing foreign bodies like fluff and hair. Leave to try in a warm room for overnight then come back and gently use 0000 grade steel wool. Wipe the the walking sticks clean being carful to remove any steel wool and then apply the second coat, this time with undiltued varish. Leave to dry as before, wipe clean and apply the third coat of undiltued varish. Once this have dryed the walking sticks are ready for use.

Cutting the walking stick to size

Next is to cut the walking sticks to your required height. Remember the old carpenters maim: measure twice and cut once. For the job i clamp the walking sticks into the vice, having first protected the bark with a lenght of plastick piping about 3 inch length x 1 inch diameter, plit in two lenghtways around the appropriate section. Providing the bark is protected any means of holding it steady will do. I use a hacksaw which is finer than a tenon saw which leaves a fine cut and helps dtop the bark spliting, but any fine tooth saw will do. That is your walking sticks cut to size.

Thumb Walking Sticks

Picture
Continuing on from our last post on thumb walking sticks, the next step is - Some V's have shoots growing from the base, in most cases they can be trimmed back carefully with and not interfere with the proper shape of the V. Its always good to remember that each walking sticks are natural and not out of the factor so there will always be a varation in each walking sticks you make.

Next the sides of the V should be trimmed to size, they should be equal lenght between 2 and 1/2 - 3 inchs long. The cut edges then should be finished, sandpaper is the best and its best not to damage the bark of the walking sticks if you can. Another process is to round over the edges so there isn't a clean cut, this can be done by sand paper or a file. Its always bit tidy to round the edges and they look better to me if i was making a thumb walking sticks.

Cutting Walking Sticks

Having identified what it is we're looking for and where to find it the next steo should be cut the walking sticks. There is may ways of cutting walking sticks but its inportant not to split the walking sticks when cutting them, so sharp tools are necessary.

A handsaw or folding saw that you find in most garden centres and tool shops,

A pair of secateurs for trimming thorns and side shoots,

A a pair of leather gloves when working with blackthorn or hawthorn,

Rope or baler twine so you can the walking sticks in a bundle and carry them,

A spade or trowel for digging up roots,

A rucksack to carry the items.

Seasoning and Storing

Having cut some suitable walking sticks and trimmed opf the side shoots, bundled them carefully and got them home safely they must be seasoned. A walking sticks shank at 25mm thick and cut in the winter mounths normally takes one year to season, when the walking sticks were cut at any other time of the year it takes a extra few months to season correctly. A walking sticks that has be dug up from the ground( a root handle) it takes up to two years to season depending on the size of the handle, to reduce the risk of spliting, the ends should be seales with a couple of coatd of varish or knotting liquid.

Before you bundle the walking sticks up give them a coat of woodworm oil, then tie them up top to bottom in bundles of 5 or 6 and put them in a airy shed ( a opened sided shed is ideal, a heated workshop is to warm). Each stick maker has ther own way of storing walking sticks, some on there flat and others vertically, the beat way of all is suspending them from the beams of roofs. This lets air around the walking sticks and prevents them from bending and also damp from the ground.

Types of Walking Sticks

Picture
Ash Saplings

Here we have different types of trees that are used to make walking sticks, there is a massive range of timber to choose from but here we will show you some examples that we use.

The image on the left is of a ash sapling used for walking sticks, Ash is a very strong wood resistance to spliting, the bark is a uninteresting grey colour, but when the bark is removed it reveals a more colourful underbark, not a common wood for walking sticks but when manufactored correctly a very nice walking sticks. Ash is mostly use as a knob walking sticks.

Picture
Birch Tree
Here we have birch used for walking sticks making, older Birch has a white bark but the youger Birch are a brown colour. The wood itself is a pale brown and even grained producing strong walking sticks. With the bark lefted on or peeled such walking sticks are very attractive.

Picture
Blackthorn Bush
Blackthorn walking sticks are famous all around the world the "ultimate" walking sticks , there is no doubt that the best blackthorn walking sticks are very beautiful. Such examples are very difficult to find and the wood is very dense which make the walking sticks very heavy.

The bush itself is very thorny difficult and sometimes dangerous to cut. The blackthorn walking sticks and the thorns were said to be Christs crown of thorns, over centuries blackthorn has been invested in all sorts of mystical powers. Branches, suckers or saplings of sufficient lenght and apporpriate diameter are to come by to make the right walking sticks. When thorns have been trimed back and its rick bark varished to a deep red hue, it will look magnificent for any walking sticks.

Thumb Walking Sticks

Picture Thumbstick Walking sticks are great for hiking or tekking, the "V" in the handle is were your thumb should go which gives you extra support when hiking. Thumb walking sticks are usually very tall at 150cm long, unlike knob walking sticks they need to be alot longer so when you have you hand on the walking sticks it should be about chest height.

Sometimes thumb walking sticks are used for a shooting stick, the "V" can be used as a rest for a rifle, these walking sticks need to be very tall some the rifle is in line with you shoulder. If you need a extra long thumb walking sticks just give us a email with your requirements.

Another advantage to thumb walking sticks is when they are very tall at 150cm if someone gets injured or has a bad leg the thumb walking sticks can be used as a crutch, just by placing the "V" under your arm pit you can then support your leg and walk on the thumb walking sticks instead of using your leg.

Walking Stick of the Month

Picture This month our walking sticks of the month is the rams horn walking sticks,
Many used by farmers as a shepherds crook walking sticks, the rams horn is very popular with its incredible strengh it is the walking sticks for farmers. Rams horn also has great grain even better than timber, when sanded with very fine sand paper tou can almost see into the horn. The other advantage of rams horn for walking sticks it has a long life span unlike timber which doesn't last as long.

This walking sticks on the left has a V jointed handle and shank, this is were the handle and the shank of the walking sticks joint together, there isn't any advantage with this joint its is as strong as a straight cut joint but the looks so much better, more time is needed when making the walking sticks but when you see a straight joint beside the V joint they are completely different walking sticks.

Rams horn walking sticks are becoming more popular every day and we hope to add to the collection by getting more rams horn and making new handles with different styles on each one. Its also importable to remember all our rams horn walking sticks are handmade using natural materials.

When jointing the handle to the walking sticks shank we use a threaded bar to connect both of them, threaded bar is a excellent material for jointing as well as gluing the joint the threaded takes its own grip, so if there was no glue on the joint the bar would still be very strong on its own, but we always use a threaded bar and glue for all our walking sticks.

We use hazel for most of our shepherds crook walking sticks for the shaft or shank. Hazel is a natural marterial which can be found all over the UK and Ireland. Hazel walking sticks are very strong when varished up they really stand out. The great about hazel its that is comes in many different colours like golden hazel, Brown Hazel and Dark Hazel, its mostly depends on the area where the hazel comes. Hazel is a very popular material for making walking sticks.

Every handmade walking sticks we make are finished at the bottom with a brass ferrule not rubber ferrules that can be purchases along the walking sticks, Brass ferrules are much stronger than rubber ferrules and when most of our shepherds crooks get heavy work its importent that the ferrule stops the end of the walking sticks from spliting.

Walking Stick Size

The best way to measure for a walking stick is to stand up straight with your arms straight down by your side and measure from your wrist to the ground and that should be the correct lenght for your walking stick.

For hiking sticks its a hard to say the correect way of measuring because everyone has a differant height that there happy with. For me i measure from my waist to the ground and i feel that this is comfortable for me.

The correct size for walking sticks is very important, take time to measure the height you need, each person might have there own size that they prefer there walking sticks to be but the image on the left shows the correct size.

Walking sticks that are to small or height can make them uncomfortable and they mightn't even made any differance to aid you when walking. Walking sticks need to be cut to the correct height.

The image is a great way of the correct position, a image is a great guide to go by. If you in any doubt just give us a email or call. The height for walking sticks is very important.

Walking Stick Making Brass Ferrule

Today we will be showing you how to fit a brass metal ferrule to the end of walking sticks, a most for any walking sticks maker.

Brass metal ferrules are very important even for something so small, unlike rubber ferrules brass ferrules will stop the walking sticks from spliting and from damage and the rubber ferrule is just for a non slip tip on walking sticks.

Tools needed:
Picture
Fine saw or Hacksaw
Picture
Chiesl
Picture
File
Picture
Hammer

Marking Out:

Picture
Step 1:
Hold the brass ferrule to the walking sticks shaft, hold it down a small bit from the shaft(so the bottom of the ferrule is not flush with the bottom of the shaft). Mark the top of the ferrule with a marker or pencil. It is easyier to see the marker on the walking sticks.

Picture
Following on from step 1 mark the line on the walking sticks all the way around the shaft in a straight line.

Cutting the line:

Picture Step 2:
Next cut a small slit on the line with a fine saw or hack saw is what i use, with its fine teeth is makes a neat cut. Only cut a small slit about 2mm deep.
Make sure the line is straight with the walking sticks and you also cut the line straight with the walking sticks. If you don't this will effect the finish of the ferrule.

I ordered a batch of 8 blackthorn walking sticks from Prestige and I couldn't be happier.  The order arrived quickly, very well protected in their packaging, and the sticks were just beautiful.  The finish is lovely, and they are also pretty strong, definitely capable of being put to use on strenuous or rocky hikes, and I have even practiced some bataireacht (traditional Irish stick fighting) to which they stood up very nicely.

I also appreciated Kevin's patience as I dragged the ordering process out over about 5 months of indecision and uncertainty over order size as my wedding plans changed.  The order (once I finally placed it) shipped over from Ireland to the US quickly.  I definitely recommend this company for anyone looking for a high quality traditional stick.

Antique Walking Sticks

Antique walking sticks cover a large range of walking sticks, the hardest part of antique walking sticks is getting them in perfect condition but for  stick to be over 100 years old you can inspect a bit damage. Most of our antique walking sticks are in very good condition we don't like selling damaged sticks.

We can also repair old walking sticks that need a bit of T.L.C, most can be repaired with on much cost but you always get  one that is beyond repair, if you need some advice just give us a call.

Silver antique walking sticks are very popular but most come at a price. We also to keep some quality silver canes in stock and getting the right silver walking sticks is very hard to find, nobady wants a damged silver handle or collar, when the handle or collar are full of dents its almost inpossible to repair.

Gold handle walking sticks are even more difficult to get, most people like to hold onto there antique canes because they have be pasted thought there family. The downside to gold walking sticks is the massive price tag with each of them even if there are fully damaged.

Old resin walking sticks always have a great look or age to them, you know straight away if it is old or not with the colour of the handle, they all have a dull colour and almost always have some small scratches or some slight damage but thats what make them so special. Resin is a great material to work with some easy to carve and there is endless possiblility of designs and styles of walking sticks.

We also have a few antique umbrellas just a nice as walking sticks, but most have to get some slight repair to the cover. The great thing with antique umbrella's is they always stand out from the crowd compared to plastic umbrella's.

Most these walking sticks are made from stone and acrylic. The handle is made from solid stone which has a great look and what is also good and the stone handle is that it is always cold to touch no matter what time of year. The shaft or shank of the walking sticks are made from acrylic which is a material endless colours and designs to choose from. al have a collar on the joint to and strenght to the joint.

The only down side to these walking sticks are that they are a bit heavy but for a handle made from real stone you don't mind that much. We try to keep the handle size to a minimin but you don't to unset the look of the walking sticks with a very small handle.

Personalize Name Engraving

Engraving is a service to personalize walking sticks with a name or date or number. We have to types of engraving available,
One is a silver disc which is mounted onto the walking sticks whenever the engraving is complete. This service is a bit expensive with the price of silver at a high but it does stand out from the rest.

Second is a engraving straight onto the walking stick, with unlimited space along more info can be engraved onto the walking rather than the silver disc. This service is very reasonable priced and makes a great gift to someone.
